마틸다는 자신을 방치하는 엄마와 아빠를 뒤로 하고, 4살이 되자마자 혼자 밖으로 나와 근처 도서관에서 시간을 보낸다. 그곳에서 마틸다는 좋은 사서 아주머니를 만나 매일같이 책을 잔뜩 빌려 집으로 돌아가는데, 마틸다가 도서관에 있는 책을 다 읽어갈 때쯤... 마틸다의 아빠는 근래 마틸다가 자신의 말에 토를 달기 시작하자 이런 걸 읽어서 좋을 것이 뭐가 있냐며 마틸다의 책을 눈 앞에서 찢어버린다.

 

마틸다는 상처 받은 듯 종이 조각들을 집어 자신의 방으로 돌아가지만, 가만히 참지만은 않는다. 마틸다가 아빠의 왁스에 엄마의 초강력 염색제를 몰래 섞으며 부르는 노래.
